During our month long celebration of Native American HERITAGE month, some of the 5th and 6th graders were part of the first of a series of Arts and Crafts @MTE.
Volunteer June Wesley designed a very special project for these artistic students to create using a gourd, which have played an important role in Native tribes for untold centuries. Often seen as a vessel to hold foods or to drink from, gourds have also been used in creating beautiful art.
The students enjoyed the process of cleaning and preparing their gourds to be decorated and turned into a musical instrument commonly called a "THUNDER GOURD" which actually makes a thunder sound when shaken.
The students shared their art project at the "CAMP DRESS on the CATWALK" fashion show on November 30th, as the Native American Heritage month long celebration was finished.

November has been delegated as Native American Heritage Month and Mt. Turnbull Elementary celebrated each week with activities and projects and presentations honoring Apache Culture. The month kicked off with a Veterans Breakfast. Our guests, the esteemed members of the San Carlos Veterans Breakfast Association, enjoyed a hearty breakfast and were given letters of thanks from the students. On November8th the students enjoyed beading Indian corn and making Apache Dolls and were treated to stories and history at the Wickiup, made especially for the month. On November 9th MTE students, staff and parents enjoyed "Walking a Mile in Your Moccasins" hosted the by the SCAHC on 15th Bob Stevens from the language to enjoyed the making of fry bread with groups of staff and volunteers making the dough.
On the 29th the internationally renowned Yellow Bird Indian Dancers from Phoenix put on a wonderful performance, featuring hoop dancing, jingle dance and even learned a pow wow song! Ken and Doreen Duncan as educators and ambassadors of the Native American Culture entertained and educated the students of MTE and the children were delighted.
Today the celebrations wraps up with "Camp dresses on the Catwalk" fashion show and featuring a special art project some students completed during Native American Heritage month. The Fashion Show will start at 2:00 p.m. today.

Tuesday November 21, 2023 we will be having our Thanksgiving Dinner starting at 10:50 a.m to 12:30 p.m. Any students leaving early will need to be checked out in the office.
Wednesday November 21, 2023 all students will be released at 12:00 p.m.
